All on pink! My road to the podium

🇬🇧:Last Saturday, the Daiwa – Arrow International Cup took place, a competition that marked stage number 4 of the Romanian Spinning League championship. The contest was held at the Tatu Trout Farm, near Sibiu, in a spring-like atmosphere and especially pleasant weather.

🇷🇴:Sâmbăta trecută a avut loc Cupa Daiwa – Arrow International, competiție ce a marcat etapa cu numărul 4 din campionatul Ligii Române de Spinning. Concursul s-a desfășurat la Păstrăvăria Tatu, în apropiere de Sibiu, într-o atmosferă primăvăratică și pe o vreme deosebit de plăcută.

🇬🇧:On Friday, before the competition, I arrived at the venue to check the water clarity and fish activity. On-site, I found slightly murky water—ideal from my point of view—and the trout were extremely active, feeding heavily on surface insects. With these field conclusions, I headed to my accommodation, where I began preparations: setting up the rods and changing the hooks on the lures I considered to be the winning choices for Saturday.

On the day of the tournament, by 7:00 AM, I was already by the lake, waiting for the technical briefing and exchanging impressions with both newcomers to the scene and veterans of the trout area discipline.

🇷🇴:Vineri, înaintea competiției, am ajuns pe pistă pentru a verifica turbiditatea apei și activitatea peștilor. La fața locului am găsit o apă ușor tulbure, ideală din punctul meu de vedere, iar păstrăvii erau extrem de activi, hrănindu-se intens cu insectele de la suprafață. Cu aceste concluzii de pe teren m-am îndreptat spre cazare, unde am început pregătirile: am montat lansetele și am schimbat cârligele nălucilor pe care le-am considerat câștigătoare pentru ziua de sâmbătă.

În ziua concursului, la ora 7:00 eram deja pe lac, așteptând ședința tehnică și schimbând impresii atât cu nou-veniții din fenomen, cât și cu veteranii disciplinei trout area. 

🇬🇧:During the first three rounds, I fished exclusively with 2.2g and 2.6g spoons, paired with the Artisan Competition 62-MH/R and 61-ML/S rods. For my main line, I chose braided line (PE), banking on the fact that I could force the fight without the risk of breaking off. However, the size and aggressiveness of the trout took their toll: they straightened several of my hooks, and I paid dues to the lake by losing three lures. With a bit of luck, I won the first round in the very last two seconds of regulation time. I breathed a sigh of relief, but I wasn't entirely satisfied because I had lost far too many fish right at the landing net.

For the following competitive rounds, I adopted a different strategy. I switched to the Artisan Competition 61-L/RF equipped with monofilament line, relying on its stretch to cushion the strikes and significantly reduce the number of fish lost at the net.

🇷🇴:În primele trei manșe am pescuit exclusiv cu lingurițe de 2.2g și 2.6g, montate pe lansetele Artisan Competition 62-MH/R și 61-ML/S. Ca fir principal am ales textilul (PE), mizând pe faptul că pot forța drill-ul fără riscul de a rupe firul. Totuși, talia și agresivitatea păstrăvilor și-au spus cuvântul: mi-au îndreptat câteva cârlige și am plătit tribut lacului cu trei momeli pierdute. Cu puțin noroc, am câștigat prima manșă în ultimele două secunde ale timpului regulamentar. Am răsuflat ușurat, însă nu eram pe deplin mulțumit, deoarece scăpasem mult prea mulți pești chiar la minciog.

Pentru următoarele manșe competitive am abordat o strategie diferită. Am trecut pe Artisan Competition 61-L/RF echipată cu fir monofilament, bazându-mă pe elongația acestuia pentru a amortiza atacurile și a reduce semnificativ numărul peștilor pierduți la minciog. 

🇬🇧:Starting with round number 4, things began to get complicated as the fish were no longer responding as well. Consequently, I applied a dynamic strategy, changing my lure every 2 to 3 casts. Although I hadn't found a clear "secret weapon," I was consistently catching 1 or 2 fish with the Jet Beater 30 (in colors #25 Morning Glory Red Glow and #26 Boiled Shrimp Red Glow), a lure I used to fish the first few meters off the opposite bank. For the mid-water zone, I switched to sinking nyoro cranks and large crankbaits, but the big surprise was the Bruco 50 (in colors #43 Three-colored Dango (GG/RG), #44 Tropical Punch (BG/GG), and #39 Matte Fluorescent Pink). The rapid rotation of these baits was the key to success.

🇷🇴:Odată cu manșa numărul 4, lucrurile au început să se complice, deoarece peștii nu mai răspundeau la fel de bine. Prin urmare, am aplicat o strategie dinamică, schimbând năluca la fiecare 2-3 lanseuri. Deși nu găsisem o „armă secretă" clară, prindeam constant 1-2 pești cu Jet Beater 30 (în culorile #25 Morning Glory Red Glow și #26 Boiled Shrimp Red Glow), nălucă cu care pescuiam primii metri din malul opus. Pentru zona de mijloc am trecut pe năluci de tip nyoro crank sinking și crank-uri mari, însă marea surpriză a fost Bruco 50 (în culorile #43 Three-colored Dango (GG/RG), #44 Tropical Punch (BG/GG) și #39 Matte Fluorescent Pink). Rotația rapidă a acestor momeli a fost cheia succesului. 

🇬🇧:As we got closer to the end, the trout began to favor pink, with the specific shade mattering less. Thus, the end of the tournament found me betting everything on pink. This strategy brought me several crucial victories, which placed me 7th in the qualifiers, a position that secured my direct ticket into an elimination match for a spot in the semifinals.

🇷🇴:Cu cât ne apropiam de final, păstrăvii au început să prefere culoarea roz, nuanța contând mai puțin. Astfel, finalul concursului m-a prins mizând totul pe roz. Strategia mi-a adus câteva victorii cruciale, care m-au clasat pe locul 7 în calificări,  o poziție care îmi asigura biletul direct într-un meci eliminatoriu pentru un loc în semifinale. 

🇬🇧:In this decisive match, I managed an important victory and qualified for the semifinals. There, however, I was narrowly defeated 4-3—a loss I take full responsibility for due to my own mistakes. I thus found myself in the bronze medal match, fighting for 3rd place. The problem was that the lures that had brought me success until then were no longer working at all. I took a deep breath and, in the remaining minutes before the start, closely watched the lake to understand what had changed in the trout's behavior.

I noticed that the fish had moved up into the upper water layer, somewhere at a depth of just 0.2 to 0.3 meters. At that moment, it was clear to me that I had to start with the Killer Bug 23 (color 07 Clear Pink). The horn blew, I cast, and waited exactly 3 seconds. Surprise: the fish struck extremely delicately. I set the hook, the reel's drag began to sing, the rod loaded perfectly, and within seconds, the first trout was in the landing net: 1–0 to me! I quickly landed two more fish, but on the next strike, I lost the winning lure. By the time I managed to find an identical one in my tackle box, my opponent caught up quickly, scoring two fish of his own.

Back in the game, I felt the bites slowing down and the pressure mounting. Close to the end, I made a long cast, counted the 3 seconds in my head, and... the strike came! A trout took it delicately, I brought it into the net, and secured the victory.

🇷🇴:În acest meci decisiv am reușit o victorie importantă și m-am calificat în semifinale. Acolo însă, am fost învins la limită, cu 4-3, o înfrângere pe care mi-o asum complet din cauza unor greșeli proprii. M-am trezit astfel în fața finalei mici, luptând pentru locul 3. Problema era că nălucile care îmi aduseseră succesul până atunci nu mai funcționau deloc. Am tras aer în piept și, în minutele rămase până la start, am privit cu atenție lacul pentru a înțelege ce s-a schimbat în comportamentul păstrăvilor.

Am observat că peștii se ridicaseră în stratul superior, undeva la o adâncime de doar 0.2 - 0.3 metri. În acel moment, mi-a fost clar că trebuia să încep cu Killer Bug 23 (culoarea 07 Clear Pink). S-a dat startul, am lansat și am așteptat exact 3 secunde. Surpriză: peștele a atacat extrem de delicat. Am înțepat, frâna mulinetei a început să cânte, lanseta s-a curbat perfect și, în câteva secunde, primul păstrăv era în minciog: 1–0 pentru mine! Am mai punctat rapid doi pești, însă la următorul atac am pierdut năluca câștigătoare. Până am reușit să găsesc una identică în trusă, adversarul meu a recuperat rapid, punctând și el doi pești.

Revenit în joc, am simțit cum atacurile se răresc, iar presiunea creștea. Aproape de final, am dat un lanseu lung, am numărat în gând cele 3 secunde și... atacul a venit! Un păstrăv a mușcat delicat, l-am adus în minciog și am obținut victoria. 

🇬🇧:It was one of the most beautiful and intense finals of my career, especially since I managed to come out on top using Evergreen lures. It is hard to describe in words the joy I still feel right now as I write these lines. It might sound like a cliché, but that was the reality at the Daiwa Cup.

Only one more trout area tournament left, after which the competitive season takes a break until autumn, and my adventures will shift to the street fishing scene alongside Salty Sensation Neo.

🇷🇴: A fost una dintre cele mai frumoase și intense finale din cariera mea, mai ales că am reușit să mă impun cu ajutorul nălucilor Evergreen. Este greu de descris în cuvinte bucuria pe care o simt și acum, când scriu aceste rânduri. Poate suna a clișeu, dar aceasta a fost realitatea de la Cupa Daiwa.

Mai urmează un singur concurs de trout area, după care sezonul competițional ia o pauză până la toamnă, iar aventurile mele se vor muta în zona de street fishing alături de Salty Sensation Neo.
